Frequently Asked Questions
What is a muscle stimulator used for?
Muscle stimulators apply electrical current to produce a muscle contraction where voluntary contraction is weak, absent or being re-educated. They are used in muscle re-education, in work on denervated muscle, and diagnostically to assess how a muscle responds to stimulation.
What is the difference between a therapeutic and a diagnostic muscle stimulator?
A therapeutic unit is built to deliver treatment programmes. A diagnostic unit adds the controls needed to assess nerve and muscle response - varying pulse characteristics to establish how the muscle reacts, which informs the treatment that follows. Our LCS-161 is therapeutic; the LCS-165 covers diagnostic work.
What is a motor point and how do I find it?
The motor point is where a muscle responds most readily to stimulation. It is located by moving a hand-held electrode over the muscle and watching for the strongest contraction at the lowest intensity - which is why an MS handle with active electrodes is used for the assessment before fixed pads are placed.
What electrodes do muscle stimulators use?
Pad electrodes for fixed placement, and a hand-held handle with active electrodes for motor point work and for small muscles where strapping a pad is awkward. Disc electrodes are used where the current needs concentrating on a small area. All three are available in our accessories range.
