Short Wave Diathermy Machines

Short wave diathermy applies high frequency electromagnetic energy at 27.12 MHz to warm tissue well below the skin surface. It is used in physiotherapy departments to warm larger joints and muscle bulk before mobilisation or exercise, and for the relief of pain and stiffness in conditions such as cervical spondylosis, osteoarthritis, ligament sprains and low back ache. Because the energy is absorbed at depth, it reaches tissue that surface heat such as a hot pack cannot.

Continuous mode delivers energy without interruption and produces a clear thermal effect - the patient feels comfortable warmth. Pulsed mode delivers the same energy in bursts with gaps between them, so heat dissipates between pulses and the average tissue temperature rises far less. Continuous mode is generally chosen for chronic conditions, pulsed mode where a thermal build-up is not wanted. Our LCS-103 and LCS-103D offer both; the LCS-101 and LCS-101D are continuous mode units.

All our short wave diathermy units run at 27.12 MHz, the internationally allocated ISM frequency for medical diathermy, with a wavelength of 11 metres. The LCS-101 and LCS-101D deliver 500 W in continuous mode. Full output, absorption and electrode details are on each model page.

Both are 500 W continuous mode units on the same 27.12 MHz platform and share the same cabinet dimensions. The LCS-101D adds an advanced digital seven-segment display for setting treatment parameters more precisely, and is supplied with both pad and disc electrodes, where the LCS-101 comes with pad electrodes. The 101D is slightly heavier at 44.7 kg against 42 kg.

Pad electrodes are supplied as standard, and disc electrodes on models where they are listed. Disc electrodes mount on adjustable stand arms and are positioned either side of the treatment area so the field passes between them; pads sit in contact with the body through towelling. Both are available separately as replacement accessories.
