Cables fail at the ends. Repeated bending where the lead meets the connector breaks strands inside the insulation, so the fault is intermittent long before it is obvious. A channel that reads fine one day and cuts out the next is almost always a cable rather than the machine, which is why keeping a known-good spare is the quickest diagnostic a department has.
Where it is used
- Connecting IFT units to patient electrodes
- Replacing leads with intermittent or dead channels
- Keeping a tested spare for fault-finding
- Routine replacement in high-use departments
