Disc electrodes for short wave diathermy, supplied as a pair on adjustable stand arms. The two circular plates are positioned either side of the region being treated and the field passes between them, warming the tissue in between rather than heating from the surface inward.

Setup is what decides the treatment. Plate spacing, the gap left between plate and skin, and keeping the two arms parallel all change how the field is distributed, so the arms need to hold position once set. Joints that have loosened let a plate drift during a session and quietly change the dose the patient receives.
