Coupling gel for ultrasound therapy, supplied in a five litre jar. The gel excludes air between the probe face and the skin, which is what allows ultrasound to enter the tissue at all.

Ultrasound does not cross an air gap, so coupling is not a comfort measure but a condition of the treatment working. Too little gel, or gel that has dried during a long session, means the machine reads as delivering while the patient receives considerably less. The five litre jar is the economical format for departments that decant into smaller bottles for each treatment room.
