The thoracic belt used to anchor the upper body during traction treatment. While the lumbar belt applies the pull, the thoracic belt holds the trunk so the force separates the segments being treated instead of simply dragging the patient along the table.

Without effective counter-anchoring, traction loses much of its effect: the patient slides, the dial still reads the set force, and the treatment does not do what the record says it did. The thoracic belt is what makes the reading meaningful.
